An Open Letter to Parents of Gender-Diverse Kids

Dear Parent,

I see you. I see the love you carry, the worries that keep you up at night, the questions swirling in your mind. Parenting is already a wild ride, and when your kid comes out to you, it can feel like you just got thrown onto an entirely new rollercoaster—one you weren’t sure you even bought a ticket for. It can feel like stepping into a whole new world—one filled with love, uncertainty, and, let’s be honest, a little bit of panic.

Before anything else, pause. Breathe. Whatever you're feeling—confusion, fear, grief, skepticism—it’s okay. You don’t have to have it all figured out today. But what happens next is up to you.

I Know What You’re Thinking, Even If You Haven’t Said It Out Loud.

Maybe you’re mourning the future you once pictured for your child. Maybe you’re terrified of the road ahead. Maybe you’re wondering if this is just a phase or if you somehow caused it (spoiler alert: you didn't). And the way forward isn’t through fear; it’s through love, curiosity, and being willing to show up, even when it’s hard.

Strip away the noise—the headlines, the social media debates, the unsolicited advice from people who don’t even know your kid. They are still the same vibrant, maddening, wonderful person they’ve always been. Think of it like the moment when fog lifts over a familiar landscape—you’re not seeing a new place, just noticing details that were always there, waiting to be recognized.

A Judgment-Free Zone for You, Too

This journey isn’t just about your kid. It’s about you, too. And you deserve a place to process all the big feelings that come with it. This is that place. No judgment. No “perfect parent” expectations. Just real talk.

❓ Need to vent? Go for it.

❓ Need to cry? I’ve got tissues.

❓ Need help separating fact from fear? I’ve got resources.

❓ Need a reminder that you’re a good enough parent? I can do that too.

Loving your child doesn’t mean having all the answers. It means showing up. It means listening. It means letting them know, without a doubt, that you are in their corner—even if you’re still learning what that looks like.

You’re Not in This Alone

If you feel like you’re stumbling through this, know that you don’t have to figure it out by yourself. In addition to working with queer and trans kids, I offer parent coaching to help you navigate this road with confidence (or at least with fewer panic attacks).

And yes, that includes you—the parent reading this in incognito mode, maybe with a MAGA hat sitting on the table next to you. If we can agree that your relationship with your child is what matters most, we can work together.

Let’s Figure This Out Together

Parenting a gender-diverse kid isn’t about getting everything right; it’s about loving them through the messy, human, beautiful process of becoming themselves. If you’re ready to take the next step, let’s talk. We’ll navigate this with compassion, real talk, and maybe even a little humor (because let’s face it, sometimes laughter is the only thing keeping us sane).

This Is The Moment You Choose. You can keep sitting in doubt, scrolling articles, waiting for some kind of certainty.

Or you can show your kid—right now—that you’re here.
