For some kids, parent sessions oughta be mandatory

Slow Down Psychology LLC

When I first started Slow Down Psychology, my vision was to offer a unique, semi-intensive healing experience.  In this vision, families engaged in at least six sessions per month: 4 weekly individual therapy sessions for the child; 2 biweekly sessions for parents. This model proved successful for most of my clients since my early days as an intern and it remains one of the most meaningful ways for me to work with families.

Why Parent Sessions Matter:

Parent sessions are crucial for protecting your investment in your child's therapy. Parent sessions also provide an opportunity to address any concerns or questions you may have about your child's therapy. They allow us to collaboratively develop strategies to support your child's growth and well-being.

These sessions aren't just about progress reports or behavior charts. They're designed for deep reflection, emotional breakthroughs, and transformative realizations about your parenting journey.

As your child's therapist, I aim to create a space where you can fully engage with the therapeutic process. This might mean shedding tears of relief, joy, or even frustration – all of which are important steps towards growth and healing for your family.

The Power of Parent Sessions:

  • They provide a dedicated space for you to process your own emotions and experiences related to your child's behavior and mental health journey.

  • They help you understand your child's therapy journey more deeply.

  • They equip you with tools to support your child's progress at home.

  • They strengthen our working relationship, which is often crucial for your child's therapeutic progress.

The benefits of this model are two-fold:  First, it provides more consistent contact and helps parents feel more engaged and invested in their child's therapy. Second, it allows me to keep a smaller case load so that I can focus more on the complex needs of each family. With these two benefits, clients tend to  improve at a more steady rate and the gains made in therapy may be more sustainable over time.

Many families are already reaping the benefits from this six-session model. Here is my gift to support these families and encourage all of my clients to deepen their engagement: From March 1st to August 31st, 2025, when weekly clients book twice-monthly parent sessions, the second parent session of each month will be offered free of charge.

Offer Details:

  • Available on case-by case basis with express consent from the child, regardless of age (i.e., I will ask your child directly if they permit parent-only sessions)

  • Available only within the months when child clients have attended individual sessions weekly.

  • Book two parent sessions per month

  • The second parent session each month is free

  • No rollovers or rain checks for free sessions

  • Maximum of two free parent sessions per month (for those who are engaged in weekly parent sessions)

  • Parent sessions must be booked at regular intervals (e.g., 2nd and 4th Thursday at 10:00AM)

By investing in these sessions, you're directly contributing to your child's progress in psychotherapy. Your mental health and active participation are crucial contextual factors in addressing your child's needs. You may have heard me say this before: You are the expert on your child, and I am the expert on child development and mental health. Together, we make a powerful team.

This offer is valid from March 1, 2025 through August 31, 2025.
